Maid Beauty Salon
The Asahi Shimbun online had an interesting article about a maid salon in Fukuoka. The beautician dresses in a maid outfit and greets the guests, who are no surprise mostly men in their 20s to 40s, with “Welcome home master!”.
“How would you like your hair today sir?”
A Western reader may see this as simply kinky, but I think this also speaks to the dissolution of the stay-at-home mother as a social institution. The stay-at-home mother would greet the husband when he came home and of course have dinner waiting. Now, with more Japanese women working also, there is no one to offer this service for men, except entrepreneurs such as this young lady. There’s a nostalgia in Japan for this kind of traditional household where gender roles were fixed.
And if you’re wondering about the price of the cut, it’s about the same despite the extra maid service.
