Kitty Hawk Denied Port in Hong Kong
There was a very good post at ObservingJapan.com about the recent rejection by Chinese authorities of a planned visit by the USS Kitty Hawk to Hong Kong.
The ship was scheduled to visit the port for Thanksgiving and crew members’ families had already arrived to celebrate when Chinese authorities rejected the ship’s request for port. The Chinese backpedaled at the last minute and rescinded the rejection, but the Kitty Hawk had by then already turned back to Japan. The incident got some press in the US.
The US Navy wasn’t happy about the incident and an admiral was recently quoted in the New York Times saying this undermined China’s desire to be a responsible player in the international system.
A shame because the relations between the two navies had been improving.
